Project Brief:

The overarching goal of the of the 5 year NIH-USA funded Precision Cardiovascular Disease Phenotyping and Pathophysiological Pathways in the CARRS cohort (Precision-CARRS) project is to transform the current cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk prediction paradigm that is based on conventional, imprecise atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk factors to personalized and precise disease prediction and early-stage detection to promote cardiovascular health for South Asians. The Precision- CARRS project will build on and enhance the scientific value of the ongoing CARRS Cohort study in Delhi and Chennai, by mapping the natural history of CVD at the granular level of subclinical/clinical phenotypes, using targeted markers and untargeted multi-omics, and assessing the role of biological, environmental, behavioral, and social factors along both atherosclerotic and heart failure CVD pathways. The Precision- CARRS project will comprise four inter-linked synergistic projects that will build upon existing data from the ongoing CARRS Cohort, and incorporate extensive new data collection, The goals of the four inter-linked projects are to:
Project 1: Estimate the prevalence, incidence, and predictors of subclinical and clinical vascular and
myocardial disease, with exploration of pathophysiologic pathways.
Project 2: Investigate the role of environmental exposures (air pollution/built environment) on the
development of subclinical and clinical vascular and myocardial disease.
Project 3: Investigate multi-omic determinants of subclinical and clinical vascular and myocardial disease.
Project 4: Investigate spousal and behavioral influences on subclinical and clinical vascular and
myocardial disease.
The project will provide an excellent opportunity to collaborate with and learn from leading global
researchers to develop an exciting career in Public Health Research.
