Capacity Building

GEOHealth Capacity Building

The Global Environmental and Occupational Health (GEOHealth) project is striving to boost capacity, cultivate a cadre of environmental health researchers, and expedite scientific infrastructure development in India. Backed by the Fogarty International Centre, US National Institutes of Health, this capacity-building initiative aims to establish an evidence base for health-focused policymaking focusing on environmental health issues, especially air pollution and cardiovascular diseases.

Working towards the aim the project has trained many researchers with diverse backgrounds in the domain of environmental health.

PROJECT EXECUTION

GEOHealth Capacity Building efforts aim to achieve a range of objectives.

Objective 1

Train future researchers, selected by CCDC and partner institutions, in environmental and occupational health research. Depth of training will provide them with the expertise needed to conduct studies of air pollution and other environmental hazards on health outcomes. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH) will provide Master of Public Health (Environmental Health) or Master in Environmental Health training for seven predoctoral students, and host 10 students for summer certificate courses, and offer mentored research experience. The Master’s students will be eligible for either the 1-year MPH program with a concentration in Environmental Health, or the 2-year Master of Science in Environmental Health.

Objective 2

CCDC and collaborating institutions will train future public health professionals in India in environmental and occupational health research methods. This training will utilize short courses, virtual classrooms, and online instruction.

Trainees will have access to short- and medium-term predoctoral training opportunities, including combined courses conducted in India and completed through virtual classrooms. These courses will draw from environmental epidemiology, environmental health, toxicology, and occupational health disciplines. The goal is to prepare the upcoming generation of public health scientists to investigate crucial questions regarding the correlation between the environment and health in India.

Objective 3

Initiate a faculty visitation program where one PHFI faculty member per year will spend 2–3 months at HSPH. This program allows eligibility for advanced coursework but primarily focuses on analyzing data from the U01 studies. Its key goal is to enhance the capacity for data analysis at CCDC and partner institutions.

Objective 4

Deliver career development and research development programs for environmental and occupational health scientists and health research professionals in India.

Objective 5

Develop and strengthen regional collaborations, including partnerships among governmental and non-governmental organizations, research institutions, and health service groups.

IMPACT

As part of this effort, the project has successfully trained numerous researchers from diverse backgrounds in the field of environmental health. The training program has had a substantial impact in terms of capacity building among public health researchers. A glimpse of the training program conducted under the project is provided below:

  • Areas of training: Mediation analysis, exposure modeling, exposure assessment, environmental epi, econometrics
  • Trainees participated from foreign countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, Ghana, and Ethiopia
  • Three masters students and one Doctor of Public Health candidate trained and completed a degree at HSPH
  • Teaching at PHFI: Faculty teaching EH courses in the current full-time MPH program (EH, NCDs, Health Systems)
  • Case studies: 2 case studies completed, and 2 under development for teaching
  • Two graduate (PhD) trainees through other collaborations [Karolinska Institutet, Edinburgh University]
